Our Beginnings

In January 2002, Sotheby’s International Realty opened its first office in Litchfield County, in the picturesque northwestern corner of Connecticut, a region of beautiful historic towns offering sophisticated country living in a central location between New York City and Boston. Situated in Washington Depot, this Sotheby’s International Realty brokerage was served by an exceptional group of associates heated by Seymour Surnow.

In 2007, the firm opened the Kent brokerage upon the acquisition of Todd Cole Realty, which was founded in 1993 by owner Todd Cole. This acquisition brought the firm to what many have come to regard as the cultural heart of Litchfield County, with a mix of country life, education and the arts.

In 2009, the Salisbury brokerage was subsequently moved to Lakeville after acquiring venerable Borden Realtors, which was opened in 1950 by Albert Borden. This brought together a small local business and a powerful broker with global reach.

Expanding Our Reach

In October 2009, William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty, which was founded in 1949 by William H. Pitt and headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, acquired the ownership rights to the Litchfield County brokerages of Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc. The brokerages were subsequently re-christened Litchfield Hills Sotheby’s International Realty in recognition of the region served and the successful track record that was established.

In June 2010, Litchfield Hills Sotheby’s International Realty expanded with the opening of the Litchfield brokerage on South Street. This prime location is in the heart of the historic district that defines the town of Litchfield, renowned for its fine shops, art and antique galleries, restaurants, and four-season recreation.
